Therapy for Teens

Adolescence is a time of significant transition, for the teenager as much as for the family. These periods may involve a variety of complex experiences, including depression, anxiety, substance abuse, peer-to-peer conflicts, academic pressures, sexual exploration and general identity formation.

Adolescence includes rapid change that often comes along with growing pains within the whole family. Guidance in navigating new boundaries, recognizing a teenager’s new capacities and maintaining a dynamic of respect from all directions is challenging for any family system.

Whether through family and/or individual therapy, all members of a system can benefit from some supportive techniques in how to manage the inevitable conflicts while maintaining open and constructive communication.

Common Concerns:

  • Communication difficulties
  • Balancing needs for support with desire for independence
  • Effective expression of emotions
  • Fostering trust
  • Managing external stressors (academics, peer challenges etc)
  • Roles in transition
  • Depression and anxiety
  • Engagement in risky behaviors
